Pop Up Profile: Mumberry
Dear Pump the Bump,
I’m in my third trimester and I’m a pool of sweat after a workout. What exercise gear should I wear without having to buy all new clothes for just a few months?
Kym, Baltimore, Maryland
If you’re excessively sweaty after a workout session that wasn’t super intense, then you’re wearing the wrong kinds of fabrics. When we were designing our line, we knew that pregnant women are already prone to sweat, so we specifically looked for fabrics that are moisture-wicking and breathable. We found a nice ventilated-mesh fabric that we LOVE that’s incorporated into our clothes to make sure you’re not a sweaty mess once you’re done with your workout. If you buy quality maternity activewear, you will be able to wear the clothes throughout multiple pregnancies, but if you want non-maternity activewear, we suggest looking for pieces that are stretchy and made of moisture-wicking breathable mesh fabrics!
What lead the company down the path of creating Mumbands (or belly bands)?
When we started Mumberry, we were two mompreneurs who always knew we wanted children some day, but didn’t yet have them. We had both worked in the health and fitness industry and as we got closer to starting families of our own, and listened to the stories of our pregnant friends, we noticed that there was a gap in the availability of maternity activewear that actually DID SOMETHING for you. Traci, one of our co-founders, was training for a triathlon and started wondering if she would be able to compete if she got pregnant before the event. That’s when the idea of the Mumband was birthed (see what we did there?) Since neither of us were pregnant, we actually used big bags of rice strapped to our bellies while testing out the first models. Coincidentally, we both became pregnant while creating the line and actually birthed our babies just two weeks apart! This allowed us to use our own bodies to really perfect the Mumband and all of our designs.
How did the company decide on the color scheme of the tanks and tees?
We took some time to look at colors that were predicted to be popular in the coming seasons, but ultimately we wanted colors that would appeal to both the girly girls and the ladies that would never EVER wear pink. We also think that your pregnancy doesn’t have to be drab and boring so we looked for FUN, bright colors! We decided that coral and emerald fit both of those requirements, and it’s actually something that we are still often complimented on. We have since released a couple of fun new colors, and plan on adding more in the future!
Where do you see the movement of women being fit and active while pregnant headed in 2017? How do you/your product fit into the movement?
This movement is GROWING and will only become more of a societal norm as time goes on. Researchers discover something new everyday about how exercise during pregnancy has more and more benefits for both mom and baby! Gone are the days of doctors telling women to take it easy (unless there’s a serious medical condition, of course.) That’s been replaced with recommendations to work out at least 5x/week! But just because it’s recommended doesn’t mean that it’s a walk in the park. Pregnancy changes the weight distribution of your body and leaves women needing belly + back support to really get the most benefits from their workout routine. The Mumband gives women this support AND still provides complete range of motion to allow moms to MOVE MORE during their pregnancy. Our products are actively supporting and progressing this amazing movement!
What’s one piece of priceless advice or assistance given to you that you wish other people received too?
When you’re pregnant and not feeling so great during those first few months (or even up until you deliver) the best thing that you can do for your body during and after pregnancy is to move. Someone told us that would be the key to feeling somewhat normal during pregnancy and really supported us as we sought to have healthy pregnancies. We wish all women could get that same support and advice!
#mumswhomove is our favorite, and embodies the message that we seek to share with all moms! #pregnantnotpowerless is another one that we love because it pushes against the stigma that women need to do nothing during their pregnancy.
